For those wishing to discover Iceland, I have bad news – it’s already been found. The tour buses are everywhere, in some places you have to queue up to get on a viewing platform and then use your elbows to get to the front for a photo – mine are sharp. However the good news is that the crowds thin out once you are more than 100m from a bus and when you are more than 500m from the bus you are on your own. Here’s Jane fleeing from a tour group today – they had her surrounded.
The weather bureau promised us another sunny day, so we headed off in a freezing wind and rain. It’s been a bad week for them. Not long after her traumatic encounter, Jane and I were enjoying a hailstorm all by ourselves.
This was an area of weird shapes in a lava flow
Next we were scaling the crater Hverfjall, which was created when lava flowed over water and created a huge explosion. The crater is 1km wide and looks like a dog bowl. We joined the other ants doing a lap in the wind and intermittent hail.
This is Jane on her final assault on the summit.
In between the showers there were a few good light shows
And finally after 4 days in the Myvatin geothermal area there was this attraction that needed revisiting. Oh the bliss!
