There are no bargains here in Iceland. Petrol and supermarkets are expensive, but the hotel prices are extortion. We were caught one night at a hotel in the middle of nowhere where it was a long drive to the next place. There was only one item on the menu – a plate of watery soup and pub-standard chicken for $50. However you could opt for just the soup at $42 if your budget didn’t stretch that far. Would you like a beer sir? That will be $10 please (it’s the same beer you can buy for $2 in a supermarket). Since then we have bought all of our food at supermarkets and tried to find a place to cook it – not always possible, so then we opt for ham and salad. We’re in a terrific guest house at present, the one with the tern colony surrounding it. There are no cooking facilities but the lovely proprietor offered us the use of her private BBQ. So here we are out in the drizzle in our puffer jackets. She thinks we’re mad.
Cheers!
Tomorrow we have to hand back the car. The tiny Mazda 2 has been heroic, save for a puncture or two. Driving on the wrong side of the road has been uneventful, except for going around a round-about the wrong way on Day 1 – whoops! Luckily no-one else was there to witness it.

Yes I have heard Norway and Iceland are expensive- unless you go to a supermarket. Anna reckons you needed to take out a loan to go to the pub. Photos are great. Envious of you in N Norway
