Eclipse

I had a bonus this week. I drove down to the Huon River for an early morning shot of boats in the mist and as you can see got what I wanted. The bonus was the partial eclipse of the sun, you may have to enlarge the photo, but if you look closely there is definitely a chunk out of the sun.

Neutral Density Filters

I got up early this morning for a sunrise from Bellerive. The water was choppy and I wasn’t happy with my efforts, so I delved into my bag for my ND filter. This beast is so dark you can’t see through it as it let’s only 1/1000th of the light pass through. There’s a few things to do before screwing the filter on – compose the picture and calculate the exposure time needed by multiplying the meter reading by 1000, so if the exposure time without the filter would have been 1/30 sec, then the exposure needed is about 30 seconds. It works every time for me.

This technique works well with water as it smooths out the waves and if you’re lucky you will get some movement in the clouds. And yes – in the trees (see the left of the photo). Oh well, nothing’s perfect!

Horseshoe Falls

Horseshoe Falls

I had to get up early to get to Horseshoe Falls this morning in order to beat the sun. Once the sun gets on a set of falls the contrasts get too great to handle.

Nevertheless, photographing waterfalls still has its challenges. Most of the top photograph is OK, but the water is blown out (no detail, just white) and the shaded areas are also too black to record any detail.

The solution is to take 2 more shots – the dark one is under-exposed to get some detail into the water and the light one is over-exposed to get some detail into the shadow areas.

Then it’s back home to blend the three images into one using Photoshop. The result is the bottom image – I hope you like it.
